[NPWT]: Evolution of Indications for its Use

چکیده
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy [NPWT], or Vacuum-assisted closure therapy [VAC therapy], is a therapeutic method using a special sponge or gauze dressing with a vacuum device to promote wound healing. Aim of the study was to assess changes in indications for use of NPWT as well as evaluation of results of its use during the last ten years by comparing the literature published in the years 2002 and 2012. An analysis made of peer-reviewed publications [Pubmed] chosen on the basis of inclusion of the term negative pressure wound therapy [NPWT]. We compared numbers and issues of papers published in the years 2002 and 2012. Number of papers concerning NPWT increased from 16 in 2002 to 249 in 2012. Indications for its use were also evaluated from healing wounds after sternotomy, diabetic foot, pressure ulcers to laparostomy wounds, infected by-pass, infected mesh after hernioplasty and many others. NPWT, when used on for right indication and especially by experienced healthcare professionals [e.g. surgeons], is an excellent tool to support wound healing, but further prospective studies are needed to understand the exact mechanism of its action.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy – A Review of its Uses in Orthopaedic Trauma
The use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) for complex and large wounds has increased in popularity over the past decade. Modern NPWT systems consisting of an open pore foam sponge, adhesive dressing and a vacuum pump producing negative pressure have been used as an adjunct to surgical debridement to treat tissue defects around open fractures and chronic, contaminated wounds. Other uses ...
متن کاملLow-cost Negative-pressure Wound Therapy Using Wall Vacuum: A 15 Dollars by Day Alternative
BACKGROUND Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been marketed for about 20 years and remains popular. The only real obstacle to NPWT is the cost; therefore, we designed an inexpensive NPWT connected to a wall vacuum. Here, we report the feasibility and safety of this product, which we call PROVACUUM (Z-Biotech, Saint-Avertin, France). METHODS As a first step, the constraints imposed on ...
متن کاملUse of negative-pressure wound therapy in orthopaedic trauma.
Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has become an important adjunct to the management of traumatic wounds and surgical incisions related to musculoskeletal trauma. On the battlefield, this adjunct therapy allows early wound management and safe aeromedical evacuation. NPWT mechanisms of action include stabilization of the wound environment, reduction of wound edema, improvement of tissue perf...

Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) plays an important role in the treatment of complex wounds. Its effect on limb salvage in the management of the diabetic foot is well described in the literature. However, a successful outcome in this subgroup of diabetic patients requires a multidisciplinary approach with careful patient selection, appropriate surgical debridement, targeted antibiotic the...

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) has been in use for over 15 years. It has been shown to promote granulation tissue and stimulate angiogenesis thereby improving wound healing. Traditionally NPWT is bulky making it use in the outpatient setting a challenge. A portable negative pressure wound system has been developed, facilitating its use in the outpatient setting. We present 4 cases highl...
